The marble most people picture: a bright white ground crossed by broad gray veining, often with gold in it. It is quarried in the Apuan Alps above Carrara. It is often confused with Carrara marble, but it is rarer, with a whiter ground and bolder, more widely spaced veining. It is calcite, so acid will etch it, and it develops a patina with use.
