Marble

Calacatta

The one most people mean when they say marble: a bright white ground crossed by broad, decisive grey veining, often warmed with gold. Quarried in the Apuan Alps above Carrara, and rarer than the Carrara marble it is usually confused with — the ground is whiter and the veining is bolder and more widely spaced. It is calcite, so it etches where acid touches it and takes a patina over a working life. Choose it because you want that, not despite it.
